Items of interest to New England orienteers

The NEOC Fall Point Series is underway, and the (friendly) competition is heating up! Current standings can be viewed here: Fall Point Series Standings. There is currently a three-way tie on Yellow, with Charlotte Duhamel, Lukas Webb, and Tor Webb all at 4 points with one more score needed. But Jieran Kvaitchadze has three scores already, and has improved with each event so far, so who knows what will happen? The high school athletes (Cambridge and Arlington, and maybe more) are crushing the grown-ups on Orange. Family battles are playing out on Brown: will Trisha Underwood keep her lead over Roger? And on Green: will Kristin Hall ever beat daughter Bridget again? Who will triumph in the Yeowell-O'Connell household?

Happy autumn to all NEOC members,

We hope you are ready for a fall filled with orienteering opportunities. To inspire you, we announce the 2021 Fall Point Series!

The 2021 Fall point series provides a bit of light-hearted competition and encourages members to attend local events. The 2021 Fall Point Series will encompass (couldn't resist it) five in-person events. Participants need to run the same color course for at least 3 of the 5 following events:

  • Sept 26: Rocky Woods (Medfield, MA)
  • Oct 2: Willard Brook Saturday (Ashby, MA)
  • Oct 3: Willard Brook Sunday (Ashby, MA)
  • Oct 24: Great Brook Farm (Carlisle, MA)
  • Nov 13: Mount Tom (Mt Holyoke, MA)

Here are the details

MikaMika Latva-Kokko and family did well at the 2021 US Trail Orienteering Championships, held May 15-16 in Philadelphia. Mika won the open category, and his and Amy's children earned 1st and 2nd in the junior category.

British Orienteering has a nice explanation of "preO" and "tempO."

NEOC's Annual General Meeting will be held on June 13, 2021, at 1:00 PM, at Houghton's Pond, Milton, MA, picnic area #4.

The main business will be the election to fill six seats on the Board of Directors. Five of those seats will be for a full two-year term; the sixth seat is for a one-year term (to complete the term of Cristina Luis, who moved to Arizona).

If you cannot attend the election, you can designate another NEOC member to cast your vote as your proxy. Download, print, and complete the Voting Proxy form. COVID-19 Safety: Use of face masks and social distancing is required at all times. Individually bagged maps will be provided, bring your own SI timing stick/card, or sanitized SI cards will be available for loan. No public restrooms will be available.
