All youth groups are invited to a day of Orienteering. It will be a day of outdoor adventure as we learn and practice map and compass skills.

When:  Saturday, April 26, 2013

Where:  Hale Reservation, Westwood MA

Quick Links:

Saturday's program will emphasize skill development, training, and practice. Youth (and adults) will be able to learn orienteering skills such that they will be able to orienteer through the woods on their own. Ample orienteering courses will be available for youth to practice their orienteering skills.

For first-time orienteers, an experienced instructor will be assigned to work with you and your group and help them learn life skills.

Registration

All youth groups must pre-register and pre-pay.
Register online (payment by credit card through PayPal)

PRE-REGISTRATION DEADLINE: April 6, 2014.  We need the time to print maps and assemble a packet of materials in advance. Enrollment limited to 400 participants.
Note: This event may fill to capacity before the registration deadline. Early registration encouraged.

Costs: $7.00 per person (youth and adults).

REFUNDS: Because the courses are preprinted on your maps, we cannot give refunds after the registration deadline.

WE GO RAIN OR SHINE.  Maps are in plastic bags.  Youth should dress for the weather.  Only a severe weather alert may cancel the event.  It’s up to the adult group leader’s discretion whether to participate or not when the weather is less than ideal.

Arrival Times: Older youth (ages 12 to 18) are encouraged to select 9:30 or 10:00 A.M. arrival. Younger youth (ages 9 to 11) are encouraged to select 10:30 A.M. or 11:00.

Departure Times: Depends on your group and the day. Generally, not later than 3:00 P.M.

Waiver of Liability: Make copies of the Waiver of Liability as needed for your group. Each participant must bring a signed Waiver of Liability.  Bring with you to the meet and hand in at check-in.  Youth that arrive without Waiver signed by their parent or guardian may not be allowed to participate.

Camping (if staying overnight): Contract Hale Reservation directly at (781) 326-1770.

Concession: Probably not (Permit required from Board of Health).

Parking: Off street parking is limited. Car-pooling is encouraged.

Leader Training: Tentative date and location: 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Hale Reservation.

Prepare yourselves for orienteering, and be better able to help your youth. N.E.O.C. will conduct a training clinic for adults. Free and open to all adults willing to help guide their group at the Hale Reservation AMC/YOP-O. Attendance is not required, but all leaders are invited and encouraged to come. Training lasts about 3 hours, maybe a little longer if weather is favorable, and less if it is not.

Help Out:  We need volunteers to help during the event.  We typically need a few adults to staff start and finish tables for a few hours during the event, and an energetic group to help pick up courses at the end of the day.  We also may need help with parking early in the day.
