TEST YOUR NAVIGATION SKILLS - ADVENTURE RACE IN THE WOODS
SUPPORT TEAM USA JUNIORS!

Breakheart Reservation, Saugus, MA
Sunday, June 2nd 2013

There will be two fun navigation races:  an advanced two-hour course, and a beginner/intermediate one-hour course.  The race will take place at Breakheart Reservation in Saugus (272 Forest St, Saugus, MA - Google map).  This is suitable for trail runners, adventure racers, families, scouts, orienteers, hikers -- anyone who enjoys being outdoors in the woods - and thinking!

This is a team event. We will help you on the day of the event to find a team if you do not have one.  (Arrive early!)  Competitors who wish to run solo may do so if they have orienteering experience.  However, advanced navigators may enjoy working in teams as practice for adventure races and rogaines. Team members are required to stay together during the race.

Beginner-friendly event: a String course will be available. Register on-site.

SCHEDULE

9:00  Registration opens.  Practice course and warm-up area.  Competitors should arrive early to check in.  There will be an opportunity to find teammates if you would like to do so.

10:40  Instruction and practice for the beginner/intermediate course

About Score-O courses

Score-O is a navigation race format in which checkpoints are scattered over an area.  Each team visits as many checkpoints as they wish within the time limit.  Different checkpoints have different point values, and the winning team has the most points.  Ties are broken based on who finished faster.  Each competitor has a map with the checkpoints marked on it, and a clue sheet describing the feature at each checkpoint and the point value for each one.  Teams are welcome to race hard -- or to go at a comfortable pace and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

The USA will host the World 24-hour orienteering (“rogaining”) championships in 2014, and the score-O format is a great introduction to rogaining.

The Courses

The Gnarly Off-Trail Navigator’s Challenge:  TWO HOUR TIME LIMIT

This course will be an off-trail navigation race.  The quadrants of the map will contain different navigational challenges such as missing sections of the map or a contour-only section -- challenges that are typically used by elite orienteers in training exercises to improve their skills.  Just in case, each team will carry a sealed envelope with a full map; bringing that back to the finish unused, still in its sealed envelope, will earn the team additional points.

The Quest (for beginner and intermediate orienteers):  ONE HOUR TIME LIMIT

This course is suitable for beginner and intermediate teams of all ages.  Participants will be offered a training session with a practice course ahead of time.  Much of the navigation for this course will be on trails; the challenge is to pick an optimal route and execute it well.  This will be a great course for a group of kids with an adult supervisor, or a family, or friends who want to learn about orienteering, or cross-country runners.

Benefit

This special event is a fundraiser for the USA Junior Team.  We are raising money to help pay for the cost of traveling to the Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC) in the Czech Republic this summer.  Five juniors from the New England area will compete in the World Championships and associated races this summer (Meg Parson, Carl Underwood, Isabel Bryant, Anne Wilkinson and Dan O’Leary). Local orienteer Anna Shafer-Skelton will be an assistant coach on the trip.  See the OUSA JWOC Team bios for more about these athletes.  Come support the team with your entry fee, and cheer them on this summer!
