Comments:
In September 2011, NEOC held its first night orienteering event in over a decade at Nobscot Reservation. On October 6, NEOC will hold its third night orienteering race at Hale Reservation in Westwood, MA on the Powissett map. Courses will include a beginner course and three advanced courses. The beginner course is explicitly designed to introduce newcomers to night orienteering.

A primary and backup flashlight are required for competitors. The backup light doesn't need to be powerful - just enough to get you out of the woods if your primary light malfunctions. Going out in groups of two or more is permitted.

Night orienteering takes place entirely in the dark. Competitors typically wear headlamps (though a regular flashlight will more than suffice) and search for reflective controls. Unlike orienteering during the day, there is much less visual information available - you can only see what is within the beam of your flashlight. Night-O requires a different skill set than day orienteering. It is very popular in Scandinavia, especially in the fall and spring. Two major relay events - Jukola and Tiomila - have night legs in the men's race.
