What a perfect day for being out in the woods! Sunny and temperatures around 70 degrees for this first Youth Series event of the year resulted in a great number of new comers as well as “regulars” wanting to enjoy the open and runnable mix of fields and woods that Beaver Brook has to offer. The park is great for beginners as it is just the right size to make it fun to orienteer without the risk of getting too lost. The courses were short and fast so many took the opportunity to try different courses or to re-run the course to get a better time! All in all, there were more than 150 runners and almost 250 starts during the day. A great start of the season!

The next event in the Youth Series will not be until September 22^nd at Great Brook Farm in Carlisle, but there are plenty of opportunities to orienteer before then. NEOC has meets in the Greater Boston area almost every weekend until mid-June and the CSU park-orienteering series starts on April 17^th for those who are available to run in parks around central Boston on Wednesday nights (information at csu.attackpoint.com). There are courses for beginners through advanced on all events and beginners are always welcome.

Registration is also open for the spring season of the Greater Boston Youth Development Program which consists of five team training sessions at local orienteering events on Sundays, May 5 – June 16. Come and meet other youth interested in orienteering and work with our coaches on improving your navigational skills, practice running through the woods, and competing on age-level orienteering courses. Pre-registration is required before April 14^th ($40 for spring session; see Greater Boston Youth Orienteering Team under the NEOC Youth tab). Beginners are welcome.

A huge thanks to all the coaches and meet helpers who made this event a success (and I apologize if I have forgotten somebody in the craziness of the day): Masha Bloom, the Brenner-Springer Family, Barb Bryant, Raina Crawford, Ian Finlayson, Jennifer Gauger, Kelly Guarino, Sylvie Guichard, the Hall Family, Yana and Evgeny Ivanov, Alex Jospe, Judy Karpinski, David Landrigan, Roman Nemet, Dorina Nimigean, Jim Paschetto, Jeff Saeger, Steven Spitz, Eugenio Trevisan, Pelle Wahlstrom, Mark Webb, Justin Wiley, and David Yee. Also a big thanks to the meet director Jim Crawford for being so willing to work with the youth orienteering team to accommodate all our extra requirements, Ed Despard for running the results station, as well as the Youth Series co-director Wendy Johnecheck for being on top of the logistics of the day. The event would not have happened without all of your help!
